This short verse is laden with profound meaning.

Some thoughts.

It makes sense to ponder over one's stated position on any issue contentious or otherwise. It is not always easy to to step back and change one's stand though.

Sometimes we may evaluate our past action or words in hindsight which may present us with a different perspective. Maybe we were too close to see things clearly back then.

Things under water appear clearer after the ripples settle down.

On  different occasions, our reactions were probably not equal to the matter at hand.

Either  we

went overboard / or

were stupefied /

were arrogant/

were late to react /

jumped to conclusions /

looked the other way /

were too timid or selfish to react /

were not so fair but sailing with the mob /

were biased in some way /

acted in a fair and just manner /

did the right thing but were in minority /

were in the right and received support as well...

So many possibilities are there.

Many a time our conditioned minds don't allow us to view things in the right perspective.

Every person is endowed with this capacity in varying degrees to evaluate his / her past actions .

Many times our actions tend to be impulsive even when unnecessary.

Anyone can act in haste on a few occasions. They may or may not repent or repeat later.

On a few occasions we listen to our inner voice.

It can be said that the frequency of one paying heed to the inner voice is proportional to one's spiritual sadhana. A person who made a fair amount of spiritual progress may not lose balance easily. He /she may quickly regain composure even in a trying situation. Also he may not harbour a lasting ill will or dislike towards anyone per se.

If we introspect our actions in the life gone by, we may recall both unpleasant and happy occasions. We may feel angry, proud, happy or guilty about our past actions.

We should never lose the ability to accept our mistakes, stick to or revise our opinions or thought processes.  Adherence to Dharma is the key. Sadhana will lead us nearer to Dharma. Our inner voice certainly guides us, if we are prepared to listen to it.
